Wood heating is often discussed in a very simplified way. One common assertion is that wood is worse for the environment than gas. But it's not that simple. It depends on what kind of wood we are burning, in what kind of stove, in what manner, and in what condition the flue is.
Natural gas is a fossil fuel. When it is burned, carbon that has been stored underground for millions of years is released into the atmosphere. Wood, on the other hand, is a renewable resource if it comes from sustainably managed forests and is used reasonably. During its growth, a tree binds carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and when it is burned or naturally decomposes, the carbon is returned to the cycle.
However, this does not mean that any wood heating is automatically ecological. The problem does not arise from the wood itself, but mainly from poor combustion. Wet wood, old heaters, lack of air, a clogged chimney, or burning waste lead to high emissions, smoke, and unnecessary burden on the environment.
Modern stoves, fireplace inserts, and custom-built stoves are technologically in a completely different league than old, unmaintained heaters or open fireplaces. Today's appliances must meet stricter requirements for efficiency and emissions. If they are fueled with dry, clean wood and according to the manufacturer's instructions, they are an efficient and sensible source of heat.
The quality of the fuel plays a crucial role. The wood should be dry, ideally with a moisture content below 20 %. Wet wood burns poorly, smokes, produces tar, clogs the stove and chimney, and reduces heating efficiency. To put it simply: instead of heating the house, the wood just dries out in the stove first.
Proper operation is equally important. Stoves need sufficient air for quality combustion, the right amount of fuel, and regular maintenance. It's not enough to buy a good heater and then suffocate it with a closed air supply. Such treatment impairs combustion, increases emissions, and reduces the amount of heat obtained.
The exhaust system also includes the flue. A chimney is not a detail, but a necessary component of safe and efficient heating. Regular cleaning, inspection, and proper draft not only affect safety but also the quality of combustion.
The claim „wood is worse than gas“ therefore doesn't hold up as a general rule. It is more accurate to say that poorly-burned wet wood in old or improperly operated equipment is a problem. Dry wood in a modern heater, with proper operation and a maintained flue, is on the other hand a renewable and efficient source of heat.
Wood is therefore not a fuel of the past. It is a traditional resource that has its place even today. It just needs to be handled correctly — not like a cheap ash can with a chimney.
