Why did you find it necessary to establish the AEVD?
The Association was not created just to face media pressure together. It was created out of the need to raise awareness of the ecological potential of woody biomass as a renewable energy source and to respond to the spread of misinformation. We are aware of the significant contribution of domestic heating to CO2. However, modern technology and good practices can significantly reduce these emissions. Our main goal is to educate new and existing woodburning heater users on how to achieve maximum efficiency with minimum environmental impact. Wood has a firm place in European energy policy, which is one of the reasons we founded the Association for Ecological Wood Heating.
What specific myths are most prevalent among people?
Let's call a spade a spade. Hoaxes affect the perception of the general public. And if people read on the internet that the European Union or the Czech government is planning to ban wood heating, that is news they will not want to keep to themselves, so they share and comment on it. Despite its falsity, this misinformation is spreading rapidly, as shown by a recent survey showing that over 20 percent of Czechs think a ban on wood heating is imminent. However, such a ban has never been mentioned in the serious media. Our role is to provide truthful and verified information that dispels these myths.
Is it possible that someone misinterpreted the ban on old solid fuel boilers?
Yes, there has probably been a mix-up. The ban, which has been in place since 2012 and whose penalties can be applied from September 2024, applies to old Class 1 and 2 boilers, not modern stoves and fireplaces. Modern appliances that meet the stringent EcoDesign 2022 criteria are safe and environmentally friendly when used correctly. It is important to remember that fireplaces and stoves are not the same as boilers and therefore cannot be judged by the same rules.
What would you recommend to people who are thinking about getting or replacing a wood heater?
I recommend that you consult with an expert to ensure that you choose the equipment that best suits the needs of your household. Professional installation, regular maintenance and proper use are key to achieving maximum heating efficiency, i.e. savings, while minimizing environmental impact.
