The heating season in the Czech Republic has just ended - and it wasn't one we'll soon forget. While last year brought a record warm winter and spring, this year has returned to normal. And May, in particular, reminded us how spring can still be pretty brisk.

This year we heated for a total of 243 days, 44 days longer than in the record warm season of 2023/24. Compared to the ten-year average, the heating season was 3.6 % longer.

May surprised with cold

According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, May 2025 was below average in temperature - even colder than April, by 0.6 °C. However, the spring as a whole has so far been one of the warmer ones. In fact, March and April had significantly positive temperature deviations (+1.9 °C and +1.8 °C respectively compared to the 1991-2020 normal).

Nevertheless, May significantly influenced the perception of the whole spring. Ice days - i.e. days when the temperature does not rise above zero even during the day - were recorded by some mountain stations as many as eight times in May. There were so many frost days that they even occurred at lowland stations, for example in Doksany.

What does this mean for wood heating?

In terms of eco-friendly wood heating, this spring is proof that investing in a quality stove or fireplace insert still pays off. People who heat with wood have been able to react flexibly to weather fluctuations without depending on energy supplies or price fluctuations. And the heating season, which this year only ended at the end of May, clearly shows this.
