Czech forests are undergoing a fundamental transformation. Spruce monocultures, which have dominated the landscape for decades, are giving way to more species-diverse stands. This trend is supported by the Ministry of the Environment, which in 2023 recorded a record 47.3 % of newly planted deciduous trees - mainly beech, oak and hornbeam.
Until recently, the spruce made up more than half of the Czech forests. But the bark beetle calamity has shown its vulnerability - and forced foresters and politicians to look for more sustainable solutions. Today, the share of spruce has fallen to 46 %, while broadleaves such as beech (9.8 %) and oak (7.9 %) are growing.
More diverse forests are more resistant to drought, wind and pests. They manage water better and are easier to regenerate naturally. What's more, they produce better quality firewood.
What is the best wood for heating?
Not all wood burns the same. Differences can be found in calorific value, combustion and the effect on the chimney. Here is a brief comparison:

Will the availability of wood change?
Thanks to the after-effects of the logging, there is still plenty of softwood, especially spruce, on the market. Although more deciduous trees are being planted, it will take 15-30 years for them to reach "firewood age".
If support for nature-friendly forest management continues, we can expect a stable availability of quality firewood. Healthier, mixed forests will offer more broadleaved trees suitable for heating, while being more resilient to climatic extremes.

Changing the species composition of Czech forests is not only an ecological necessity - it is also a chance for responsible heating with wood. Promoting deciduous forests will help nature and at the same time bring people better and more efficient fuel.
Wood remains a renewable and environmentally friendly source of energy - if it is harvested and used wisely.
